Intensive care unit or critical care unit is a special department of the hospital that provides intensive treatment. These units cater to the patients with severe or life threatening illness and injuries which require constant care, close supervision from life support equipments and medication. The units are staffed by trained physicians and nurses.
There are different types of ICUs depending upon the conditions they are made for.
Surgical & Medical ICU, Cardiac ICU, Neonatal ICU, paediatric ICU, Neuro Intensive ICU, Post OP ICU, Psychiatry ICU etc.
Equipments common to all types of ICU’s.
- Ventilators, Endotracheal and Trachiostomy Tubes, Cardiac Monitors, Intravenous Lines, Feeding Tube, Suction Pumps, Drains and Catheters.
- ICU needs backup of laboratory and imaging dept.
In VHL we have 4 kinds of ICUs :
1) Cardiac intensive care unit.
2) Medical and surgical intensive unit.
3) Neonatal ICU
4) ICU to look after post operative cases
Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
It is specially designed to take care of patients suffering from different cardiac problems, like unstable angina, heart attack, dysrrhythmia and various other conditions that require continuous monitoring and treatment. Main features of our CICU is availability of continuous monitoring of cardiac rhythm by central monitor. This allows early intervention with medication or defibrillation. Cardiac ICU has backup of cathlab.
Medical and Surgical ICU
This unit treats medical and surgical critical cases like strokes, septicaemia, shocks, coma, ketoacidosis, poisoning, status asthmaticus, status epilepticus, multiorgan failure, head injuries multiple fractures, snake bites, spine injury etc.
This unit is equipped with equipments required for treating above mentioned conditions. The unit is staffed by intensivist and skilled assistants.
