Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Cancer is a disease in which abnormal body cells divide uncontrollably forming a mass and spread to other parts of body harming normal tissue. The cancer cells destroy the body tissue and ultimately kill the patient.

Cancer is diagnosed by means of imaging techniques, biopsy, immunohisto-chemistry, molecules study, bone biopsy, haematological tests and detecting tumor marker.

Modes of treatment :

Surgery, Radiation Therapy, Chemotherapy, Immuno Therapy, Targeted Therapy, Hormone Therapy, Precesion Therapy, Stem Cell Transplant.

Out of these 8 modes, surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and immnunotherapy are available in our hospital. Radiation therapy is given in two forms.

(i) External beam therapy (Linear Accelerator)

(ii) Internal source radiation therapy (Brachy Therapy)

Vivekanand Hospital has been treating cancer patients, since long with limited sources. We had strong desire to upgrade the department, but could not do so due to lack of funds and expert doctors. Dr. Brijmohan Zanwar a very dexterous, knowledgeable and dedicated oncosurgeon joined VHL team and gave a strong impetus to the onco work in the hospital. Coincidently, in 2010 Dr. Rajan Badve, Director and chief surgeon of Tata Cancer Hospital met Dr. Kukade, founder trustee of VHL, during his private visit to Latur. He was moved to the core after witnessing the medicosocial services, VHL had rendered with minimal financial resources. He inspired Dr. Kukade and his team to establish a full-fledged cancer hospital. He also promised  a donation of  COBALT unit costing Rs. 2.5 cr, as a promotional gesture.

After this incident, the things moved very fast and within minimum record time of 3 yrs. a new well planned hospital having 3 robust radiation-proof concrete bunkers, one each for Cobalt unit, Linear Accelerator and Brachy therapy machine, was constructed.

It was constructed on a 3 acres of land in MIDC area of Latur. Dr. Pramod Tike (Radiation Expert) Dr. Nikhil Ghadyalpatil (Chemo expert) joined Dr. Zanwar to complete the team.

Presently large numbers of patients have been receiving most modern, world class treatment at Vivekanand Cancer Hospital. Recently Govt. of India has sanctioned ‘Tertiary Cancer Care Centre’ status to our hospital with sizeable amount of grant. The grant helped us upgrade our hospital in a big way.
